Sitnasuak Native Corporation is pleased to announce the successful property acquisition of just over 1,700 acres along the Nome River from The Conservation Fund. The Conservation Fund is a nonprofit organization with more than 40 years of expertise. Their mission of conservation, creating innovative solutions that drive nature-based action for climate protection, sustainable economies, and vibrant communities, aligns perfectly with ours.
This achievement highlights our steadfast commitment to our mission of benefiting Shareholders, safeguarding our land and resources, and supporting our cultural heritage. Previously held under gold claims, this land is now protected to preserve vital habitats and uphold our subsistence traditions.
This project exemplifies a rare alignment of cultural, ecological, and community priorities. By conserving this corridor of the Nome River, The Conservation Fund and Sitnasuak Native Corporation have ensured that a landscape of significant importance to Alaska Native heritage, as well as crucial to local wildlife and regional food security, remains healthy, accessible, and resilient for kiŋuniavut (future generations).
An official celebration will be held this summer to commemorate this historic milestone; kindly stay tuned for future announcements.
Our deepest gratitude to our dedicated Board, Land Department, and Committee for their unwavering efforts in this significant acquisition and to The Conservation Fund for their confidence in our work. We are immensely proud to incorporate this pristine property into our Sitnasuak Land holdings.
