Company Overview

Sitnasuak Native Corporation (SNC) is one of the Alaska Native village corporations created by the U.S. Congress in 1971 under the provisions of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA), settling land ownership disputes between the U.S. and State governments and the aboriginal owners.  During the 1970s, ANCSA regional and village corporations selected land in and around Alaska Native villages in the state of Alaska in proportion to their enrolled populations.

The largest of the 16 village corporations in the Bering Straits region and headquartered in Nome, Alaska, SNC was incorporated in 1972 as a for-profit corporation.  It now has more than 2,400 shareholders.  SNC has seen its initial 1971 enrollment of 2,054 increasing as a result of inheritance and gifting.  With the land entitlement of 161,280 acres, we have received patent to 43,486 acres and interim conveyance to 109,417 acres, which is approximately 95% of the total.  In addition, the corporation received 81,280 acres of land of which the subsurface resources are owned by Bering Straits Regional Corporation (BSNC) - one of the 13 Alaska Native regional corporations created under ANSCA.

Sitnasuak's mission is to earn profits on operations while protecting our land, culture and benefiting shareholders.  It operates a number of for-profit businesses in Nome, including a home heating fuel delivery service, a real estate venture that owns residential apartment and commercial buildings, and jointly with BSNC owns and operates a wind generation farm.  SNC also owns six professional and technical service companies operating throughout the U.S.

SNC is led by an 11-member Board of Directors.  The corporation employs nearly 1,500 individuals in Alaska, the Lower 48 and Puerto Rico through the parent organization and its nine subsidiaries.
